Blairgowrie is a lovely
town on the banks of the River Ericht, and was formerly associated with textile mills, which used the water power of the Ericht. With the decline of the mills, it became a centre for growing soft fruit such as raspberries. The mill's waterwheel and some of the machinery are also on view. To the south of the town is the Meikleour Beech Hedge, planted in 1745, which is the tallest hedge in Britain. |

The easternmost of the East Neuk (east
corner) of Fife's fishing villages, Crail is also one of the most attractive and has a lovely picturesque harbour. As a long-established royal burgh, Crail had strong trading links with the Low Countries across the North Sea—the crow-stepped gables and other architectural features show Dutch influence, while the Town House bell, cast in 1520, carries a Dutch inscription. The story of the town is told in the Crail Museum and Heritage Centre, which is housed in an 18th-century building. |

With its crag-top castle
dominating the old town, Stirling played a central role in Scotland's tumultuous history. Stirling Castle formerly guarded the routes between the Highlands and the Lowlands, and below its walls Robert the Bruce defeated the English at the crucial Battle of Bannockburn in 1314. The Bannockburn Heritage Centre tells the story and is just one of a range of historical attractions within the town.
