and looking directly at Fort George is the Black Isle village of Fortrose and its near neighbour Rosemarky. Of particular interest is the Courthouse at Cromarty (10 miles). Today it is a visitor centre with animated period figures, a reconstructed trial, prison cells, and plenty of Back to Menuground information about its role when Cromarty was a thriving burgh (a Scottish town with trading rights). |

| Glencoe | ||||

Glencoe, often known as "the Glen
of Weeping" lies south of Fort William, the lofty "Pap of Glencoe" overlooking the beautiful Loch Leven. In the lower part of the glen, men under the command of Campbell of Glenlyon defied the traditions of Highland hospitality, and after being guests of the MacDonalds for almost two weeks, cold-bloodedly slaughtered their hosts. There is a National Trust for Scotland visitor centre is higher up the glen in the more dramatic part of Glencoe. There are fine views from the roof of the building. Southwest of Glencoe is Rannoch Moor, a vast expanse of heather covered peat bog, treacherous in all seasons. |

| Glenfinnan | ||||

Glenfinnan lies at the
head of Loch Shiel and has a special place in the history of Scotland being the starting point of the 1745 Jacobite Rising. The monument tower of 1815 with its 1834 figure of a Highlander may not be in the exact spot where Bonnie Prince Charlie unfurled his father's white and red silk banner, but it is romantically set at the head of Loch Shiel overlooking the wooded Eilean Glean Fhianin and the mountains of Sunart and Moidart. The rising, after early successes, was crushed by the massacre of the tired, and largely unfed Highlanders at the Battle of Culloden Moor where no mercy was shown by the infamous Duke of Cumberland, still known as "The Butcher". |
