Holiday Apartment - Portland House

The apartment is located on the esplanade in Dunoon on the Cowal Peninsula, close to the town centre and within easy access of both the Caledonian MacBrayne and Western Ferries terminals.

The area is surrounded on 3 sides by the sea and offers wonderful views.  Dunoon is a 5 hour drive from the Midlands area.

Portland House has its own private car park and enclosed garden.  There are unrestricted views towards the Clyde estuary.

The apartment is tastefully decorated and presented to offer guests home-from-home comfort and a pleasant base from which to enjoy many different activities in this truly amazing part of Scotland from sightseeing to quad biking.

The hills of Cowal are rich with wildlife, with roaming red roe deer, red squirrels, pine martens and otters. Seals can be seen on the lochs and there are golden eagles to delight the birdwatcher.

The apartment comprises two double bedrooms (king size beds) and one twin, suitable for up to six people. The master bedroom has a large en suite bathroom with a double "hi-tech" power shower that is sure to invigorate in the morning.

The kitchen is fully fitted, again to a high standard, with all modern conveniences.  This includes an electric halogen hob and extractor with coordinating oven below.  There is also a dishwasher, fridge freezer, microwave, toaster, sandwich maker, washing machine and tumble drier.

The lounge is a well-appointed room overlooking the ever-changing scene of the Clyde and along the promenade to the ferry terminal.  If you get tired of the beautiful views, then you have TV, DVD player and hi-fi system (teenagers please note) in this relaxing room.

Traditional Scottish farmhouse in a quiet, idyllic, coastal location.  Prominently sited above the small Argyllshire village of Innellan. Paths to beach and to the pony trekking centre. Overlooking fields and the Clyde estuary.

Bright and airy, freshly decorated with 2 reception rooms, 4 bedrooms (2 doubles and 2 singles) with a top quality sofabed in the sitting room.  1 bathroom (hence the price), utility room and large old-fashioned kitchen which leads to a covered eating area in farm courtyard.  An ample space for a family to enjoy.  A welcome pack of essential food items is provided to help you settle in on your first day.

We welcome responsible pet owners.  Dogs can be off the leash in the enclosed courtyard, but must be on a leash elsewhere due to the risk of worrying livestock.

2 open fires with firewood/peat available to burn.

A small kids play area with swings, slide, sand pit in the overlooked, secure, landscaped courtyard (gravel surface).

The local shops are a pleasant 1 mile seaside walk away.  Most of your needs can be ordered and catered for from here.

2 TVs - 1 with DVD player and 1 a TV/Video combi.  Stereo. Washer and dryer.  Fridge/Freezer.  Microwave, Dishwasher, Iron.  Linen provided on request.  Outdoor furniture and barbecue.  Electricity included.  Cot can be provided on request.  Priceless views to sunsets and quiet aspect of coastal scenery.

3 bedrooms overlook the Clyde estuary.  Each has expansive views including that of the Buteshire Islands.  Our neighbour is the Velvet Path pony trekking centre, a member of the R.D.A., who use the dirt track road in front of the farm as part of their trekking route.

Activity Suggestions:

Beach comb and marvel at the spectacular view of the rugged Arran mountains.

Pick your own seaweed and enjoy a relaxing 'skin tonic' soak in the double-ended bath.

Explore adjoining Bluebell woods, the scenic West Highlands, the neighbouring National Park, sample excellent local produce in the main town of Dunoon.

An area full of history and contrasting scenery.  Visit local castles where the Lamonts slaughtered the Campbells (and vice versa).

The Argyll gardens that are home to the tallest trees in the UK and impressive Rhododendron collections.

Innellan, where rich Glasgow merchants built mansions that commanded awesome Clyde views.  Sandy Beach where Florence Nightingale holidayed.  The shore road that inspired a certain Harry Lauder to compose "Roamin' in the Gloamin*" (*twilight).

Along from Dunoon that is home to to Burns' (Scottish national poet) Highland Mary - yes another girlfriend, but she was reputedly his true love.  With high hills and delightful deserted spots to take a picnic and many villages that hold their own individual charm, and not far from Glasgow which offers all the highlights that a metropolis can.

Dunoon/Sandbank offers various adventure watersports including the River Rocket and Proadventure activities.  Being situated on the Clyde, you have access to local river traffic that can take you to neighbouring islands and points that would be far by car.

You can choose between the Waverley, the last sea-going paddle steamer in the world, or the small, but perfectly formed "Second Snark" that is more intimate and specialises in wildlife sites along the river.

Silver Birch Cottage is a self-contained wing of the owner's bungalow in the pretty village of Ardentinny, on the shores of Loch Long, with private, off road parking provided for visitors next to the entrance door.

It has marvellous views from the Lounge over the Loch to the south and east, and the hills of Argyll to the North. Guests have sole use of a large landscaped garden that faces east and overlooks the Loch.

The accommodation is all on ground floor level and consists of entrance hallway, lounge/dining room (with well equipped kitchen area), shower/toilet room and a twin bedroom.  The Cottage has electric heating throughout and the rental tariff includes all electricity costs and provision of bed linen and towels.

Up to two well-behaved pets are usually welcome by prior arrangement.

The quiet, scenic beauty of Argyll is ideal for wonderful walking and cycling.  The area abounds with wildlife:  roe deer, seals, red squirrels and many varieties of birds, including herons and hawks, can be seen on a regular basis.

The Cowal Peninsula is home to the botanical gems of Benmore Gardens and Ardkinglas Estate, with their dazzling display of rhododendrons and azaleas, and impressive specimen trees and plants, brought to the area from around the world by previous generations.

The many leisure pursuits available nearby for visitors include fishing, sailing, golf, quad biking, swimming and bowling.

The quiet roads of Argyll make driving a relaxed and enjoyable experience.

One hour and a short ferry crossing across the famous Kyles of Bute takes visitors to the Isle of Bute and Mount Stuart House, the seat of The Marquis of Bute, with its magnificent, ornate marble interior.

For a day further afield, Oban (for a visit by ferry to the Island of Mull and the Isle of Iona), and Stirling Castle are all about two hours away by car.

Trains and buses link up with the ferry services from Dunoon for visitors who wish to visit the shops in Glasgow without taking their car.
